Community-led archaeology experiences

Most archaeological tourism is mediated by academics. You visit a site, you read a placard, you leave. The people whose ancestors made the petroglyphs are nowhere in the experience. Savimbo offers the alternative: archaeology experiences led by the Indigenous and local communities who have been protecting these sites for generations. They decide what visitors see. They tell the story in their own voice. They keep what comes from it.
Local protection of archaeological sites is as important as local protection of biodiversity. It reinforces an ancient connection with the land and historical values. For instance, Indigenous Peoples often say “animals are our older brothers”. This value has a positive feedback loop with protection of primary forests, biodiversity, and regeneration, and it can be seen reflected in cave paintings, stone carvings, and artifacts found in the zones our growers protect.
Take some extra time on your visit to support smallfarmers and Indigenous groups who protect and preserve sacred, ancient, and archeological sites. We do!
These stories are not just tales of the past—they are living knowledge systems that connect communities to their ancestry, cosmology, and the land itself. Listening to elders and local guides is essential to understanding the spiritual and ecological context of each site.
Furthermore, supporting archaeological conservation is also a way of defending Indigenous sovereignty and cultural memory. As these sacred places face increasing threats from deforestation and extractive industries, collaborative ecotourism becomes a powerful act of resistance and restoration. Your visit can help amplify local voices and efforts to protect both the visible and invisible heritage of these lands.
Featured experience
Putumayo, Colombia
Hike to ancient petroglyph sites with Indigenous guides in the Putumayo region of the Colombian Amazon. Don Ramiro has preserved several ancient petroglyphs on his farm without funding, but with dedication and care. This is really a world class experience of pre-Colombian knowledge preservation. Truly a living library.
